The business and financial services (BF&S) sector, based largely around Manchester, is the country's biggest hub outside London. Over 250,000 people, equivalent to around 11% of all those employed in the UK's BF&S sector, work in companies involved in accountancy, corporate finance, wealth management, banking, retail finance, banking and law and help generate £9bn of turnover each year in the Northwest.

As the largest finance and stock-broking centre outside of London, 60 banks  have corporate headquarters in the region, including Royal Bank of Scotland, JP Morgan, Bank of America, Barclays, the State Bank of India and Cooperative Financial Services.

Northwest companies are particularly recognised for their expertise in AIM listings, private wealth management, venture capital investment, public-private partnerships and sports, maritime and environmental law.
