England's Northwest is involved in a range of world leading energy production and environmental research activity. The region possesses a workforce skilled in the processing of traditional energy sources, nuclear power and renewable energy.

The Energy and Environmental sectors together generate a turnover of more than £7bn and employ over 100,000 people.

The Sellafield plant in Cumbria employs 12,000 people and has created a cluster of supporting businesses that employs a further 23,000 people and which has helped make the Northwest a world leader in the production of nuclear energy. 

The Shell refinery close to Chester has a refining capacity of 12 million tonnes, while Warrington's United Utilities facility employs over 17,000 and generates revenue of £2.4 billion from Asia, North America, Australia and Europe.

The Environmental Centre at Lancaster University is the largest of its kind in the UK, and together with the Joule Centre for Energy Research at Manchester University represent some of the most significant UK investments in environmental research and development.

Envirolink Northwest: Envirolink Northwest was formed and is led by business leaders from the environmental sector in England's Northwest. Its aim is to support the development and growth of the environmental industry in England's Northwest by increasing the levels of innovation, knowledge and technology transfer within the sector, increasing the level of learning and skills in the current and future workforce and promoting the sector in regional, national and international markets.
