Advanced manufacturing: The Northwest boasts some of the UK's most advanced manufacturing and engineering businesses with regional expertise that includes aerospace, automotive, chemicals and advanced flexible materials.

Biomedical: The region is the largest producer of pharmaceuticals in the UK with 230 biomedical companies including  Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, Mediummune, Bristol Myers Squibb, Sanofi Aventis and Novartis.

Creative & Digital Industries: The Northwest has a long standing reputation of excellence in creativity and artistic innovation. Apart from its proud ties to the music industry, today it is bocoming a hub for innovative production of TV, film and digital content.

Energy & environment: The region possesses a workforce skilled in the processing of traditional energy sources, nuclear power and renewable energy and employs over 100,000 people who together generate a turnover of more than £7bn.

BFS: The Northwest boasts the largest financial services hub outside of London and employs over 250,000 people. This workforce is employed in companies involved in accountancy, corporate finance, wealth management, banking, retail finance, banking and law and help generate £9bn of turnover each year in the Northwest.

Food & Drink: Generating 12% of the region's income, the food and drink sector in the Northwest is one of the largest in the UK.  The industry and its supply chain account for 15% of the region's employment and is renowned for its strengths in red meat and cereal processing, dairy production and fast-growing areas such as prepared and speciality foods. Well known brands include with bases in the region include Nestle, Heinz, Kellogg's, Patak Foods, Fox's biscuits and Vimto.
