Biomedical

The Northwest is the largest producer of pharmaceuticals in the UK with 230 biomedical companies - including the likes of Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, Mediummune, Bristol Myers Squibb, Sanofi Aventis and Novartis - employing 25,000 people. 

Within Merseyside alone, 80 companies contribute around £250 million to the regional economy leading Liverpool to be chosen as home to the new state of the art £30 million National Biomanufacturing Centre. 

At Manchester University, the School of Biological Sciences was awarded two five-star ratings for pre-clinical studies and biological sciences in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2001), making it the only five-star biological sciences department in the country. The University's 'Core Technology Facility' is a £25 million state-of-the-art incubation and biotech business support centre while 'Biobank' was launched to create the world's largest information resource for medical research.

The Northwest Science Council: The Northwest Science Council is a partnership of leading business, academic and economic development organisations committed to establishing a common vision for science in the region and developing strategy to make things happen.

Bionow: Bionow is the cluster support group for the Northwest of England's biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. The Cluster's aim is to provide a fully integrated bio/pharmaceutical company support structure for the region, ensure the continued growth and development of the biotechnology community, be fully recognised within Europe's top 10 biotechnology locations and contribute to the international biotechnology industry.
